The Victorian Disability Worker Commission (VDWC) protects people with disability, including children and young people. It registers and regulates workers who provide disability support.

Within the school environment, the VDWC regulates education support staff who work with students with disability. This includes integration aides, learning support officers and teachers’ aides. These are vital roles in every school and come under the Disability Worker Regulation Scheme.

Under the scheme, all disability support staff must comply with Disability Service Safeguards Code of Conduct (the Code). The Code is a legal obligation underpinned by respect, quality and safety. It identifies the requirements for staff providing supports or services to students with disability. The Code includes guidance for staff and is a key safeguard for students with disability.

For enquiries about the quality or safety of disability support in schools, contact the VDWC on 1800 497 132 or email info@vdwc.vic.gov.au.

Anyone in the community can raise a concern or make a complaint about breaches of the Code.
