Infographic map of Victoria, Australia, illustrating school review travel across the state. The graphic states “Travelled over 6,400 km” and uses location markers connected by dotted routes. Distances from Melbourne are shown for Portland (353 km), Ballarat (115 km), Woodend (71 km), Rosebud (90 km), Phillip Island (142 km), Shepparton (191 km), Benalla (212 km), Cobram (260 km), and Wodonga (321 km). A central marker near Melbourne indicates visits to 15 metropolitan schools and 13 outer metro schools.

In February this year, we opened our 2026 school review and Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) reregistration programs.

Our reviewers travelled over 6,400 km to visit independent schools, large and small, throughout metro and regional Victoria.

From Portland to Wodonga, we sat down with principals and teachers to hear about how their schools are providing a quality education to Victorian children and young people and keeping them safe. We toured school grounds, learned more about implementation and practice, and provided guidance to comply when needed. This included guidance about:

  • regularly reviewing risk management strategies
  • complying with the Child Safe Standards (Ministerial Order 1359)
  • requirements for enrolling overseas students
  • meeting the not-for-profit and governance requirements.

If we identify non-compliance, schools are provided with a rectification plan and provided with the opportunity to meet with us to clarify what they need to do to comply.

Schools scheduled for review or CRICOS reregistration in 2027 will be contacted later this year. In the meantime, schools with questions can contact: vrqa.schools@education.vic.gov.au(opens in a new window).
