When you register a child for home schooling it means you have primary responsibility for their education.

Home schooling can take various forms, including:

  • different styles of learning, ranging from informal approaches to formal curriculum programs
  • one or more parents instructing their child
  • groups of home schooling students attending activities with an educational or social purpose
  • attending excursions and playing sport
  • employing a tutor with specialised knowledge.

Home schooling cannot take the form of a 'quasi' school arrangement. This means an instructor or teacher employed to instruct a group of students, away from the home base and during normal school hours.

All schools in Victoria must be registered and the VRQA will not approve home schooling applications that do not align with the Department of Education’s Home Schooling and Partial Enrolments Policy.

If we believe a child registered for home schooling is attending an unregistered or ‘quasi’ school, we will contact you requesting more information. To find out more about the home schooling application process see: Register to home educate

If in doubt about your registered child’s home education program, contact: home.schooling@education.vic.gov.au
