Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration is going digital – providing you with a new way to instantly verify teacher and early childhood teacher registration in Victoria.
You’re already using VIT’s register of teachers and the Employer portal to confirm and monitor teacher registration. Now you can conveniently access the same evidence of teacher registration with digital registration cards on the Service Victoria app.
This will assist you to comply with the teacher requirements minimum standard.
Digital registration cards are always up to date – pulling live data from VIT’s registration system.
A teacher’s registration can change at any time (for example, conditions may be placed on a teacher’s registration, or their registration may be suspended or cancelled), so physical cards may not provide a teacher’s current registration status.
Digital registration cards will assist you to better manage teacher registration by:
- ensuring teachers hold current registration
- managing any conditions.
Schools can also use these cards to help them meet Child Safe Standards obligations. They will help ensure all staff have valid VIT registration or permission to teach, and help manage any child safety concerns.
What will this change mean for how schools comply?
The introduction of digital registration cards may require you to update your teacher requirements, recruitment and supervision policies and procedures. We appreciate that this creates an administrative burden, but it is an important change to improve the protection of children and young people.
These quick tips can help you prepare for this change and continue to meet the minimum standards.
Employing and inducting new teachers
Your current practice may be to ask a teacher to provide their physical registration card to confirm they hold current registration. You can now:
- request the teacher’s VIT registration number to check the VIT register of teachers before employment
- ask the teacher to show their digital registration card on the Services Victoria app before employment, then scan the QR code and verify their registration details via the VIT register of teachers.
Managing and monitoring teacher registration
Your current practice may be to photocopy the teacher’s physical registration card, store hardcopies and record their registration details in your register of teachers. You can now:
- export the teacher list from your employer portal and save a digital copy
- streamline your policies, procedures and practices to ensure your teacher register is current by updating it regularly throughout the year.
Managing casual relief teachers
Your current practice may be to ask a casual relief teacher (CRT) to provide their physical registration card to confirm they hold current registration. You can now:
- request the CRT’s VIT registration number to check the register of teachers before commencing
- check a form of photo ID and their digital registration card before their commencement, then scan the QR code and verify their registration details via the register of teachers.
